It is an spectacular diffuse nebula, one of the largest and brightest in the sky. This nebula is one of the largest H-alpha regions in the Milky Way. The only reason it isn't better known is that it cannot be seen from the northern hemisfere. It was discovered by Abbé Nicolas Louis Lacaille during his journey to Cape of Good Hope in 1751. It also contains several stars that are among the hottest and more massive known.

In is in the Sagittarius arm and is 9000 light years away from Earth.
